Karin Schimke - Tutor: Introduction to Poetry

Karin-Schimke-poetry Karin Schimke is a South African poet with close ties to the poetry community, particularly in Cape Town, because of her long-standing association with Off The Wall poetry, one of the longest-running poetry happenings in South Africa. She was the MC at this weekly gig for over four years, and continues to read and host there often.
She performed her poetry on Badilisha Radio - and twice at Badilisha Poetry Xchange.
She has also performed at, amongst others, the Klein Karoo NasionaleKunstefees, the Cape Town Book Fair, the Franschhoek Literary Festival and the poetry-on-the-road festival in Bremen, Germany, and hosted poetry and book discussions at various book launches and festivals.
She was offered a one-month writer's residency on the island of Sylt, north of Germany, on the strength of her debut collection Bare & Breaking, which was published by Modjaji Books in 2012. This collection was a finalist with one other in the poetry prize at the South African Literary Awards in 2013.
Her work has been published in a variety of literary magazine, including New Coin, New Contrast and SA Writing and has twice been selected for inclusion in the annual Sol Plaatje Anthology.
Karin's poems have been translated into German by the German poet Sylvia Geist for an anthology of South African poets called AnkunftEinesWeiterenTages(AfrikaWunderhorn).
She writes in English and Afrikaans, and reads in English, Afrikaans and German.
Karin is the editor of the Cape Times books pages, a copy editor for Health-e News, a freelance journalist and columnist, and a writing coach, both on-line for SAWC, and for publishing companies, and has run poetry workshops for scholars and students.
