Skryf 'n roman

Alles in Afrikaans.

(Modules 1-5)
  • Skryfvaardighede: styl, dialoog, hersiening (Modules 6-8)

“Words on paper can tell you a story, but the emotional gain from completing something so satisfactory that you want more, is a whole new exciting ball game on its own. The course was motivating and inspirational at all times. I look forward to working with my tutor again on the Advanced Novel Writing course.”

Alta Steyn, Skryf 'n Roman

I received very good service from SA Writers’ College and my tutor Wilna was absolutely fantastic! I learnt a lot from her; her feedback was always clear, to the point and very valuable; she is a great motivator. I've gained a lot of knowledge and the will to see my novel through and complete it. The feedback and overall critique from my tutor has grown my confidence and made me realise with hard work and dedication I might actually do this! Thanks to all of you.” Corne Scheepers, Skryf 'n Roman Kursus

An unsolicited mail from a published student :

Dear Mrs Meyer

I've wanted to be a fiction writer since high school. I struggled for years until, by pure Google chance, I happened on a link to the South African Writers College. I had a look, saw the Skryf 'n Roman course, and was excited when I saw that it involved a tutor that read and commented on your novel as you wrote it. I felt that this was exactly what I needed, given that publishers always returned my manuscripts with a mixture of positive (style, research, dialogue) and negative (characterisation, tension, too much forensic detail, some other niggles).

My tutor was Wilna Adriaanse and she was excellent. I told her from the start that I was serious about writing and getting published was my goal. Wilna was strict, and always supportive. She offered advice that led to a crucial change in my approach to storytelling. Where I used to write in a relatively detached third-person, she continuously had me focus on the main character, to the point where the final story is only the use of "I" away from first-person.

I learnt a lot from the course and from Wilna's guidance, finished my novel and submitted it to a publisher. It was rejected, but I had managed to resolve a number of my problems. Despite improvement, characterisation remained an issue. I kept in touch with Wilna and she continued to offer advice to help me really find my characters. Perhaps more importantly, she kept believing in the story. More drafts followed, as did a couple of rejections, but the characters were beginning to really come to life. And then, towards the end of last year, my manuscript was accepted by LAPA.

Chanette Paul, who also does manuscipt development for LAPA, wrote this in her report:

This same character had previously been described as boring and without a strong personality in reports based on earlier drafts.

Without Wilna's continued support and belief in my story and my characters, I probably would've given up on it. I would've missed finally making that real connection with my characters. And I wouldn't have a debut novel, donker spoor, on shelves in book stores as I type this.

So I want to thank the South African Writers College for offering these writing courses and attracting people like Wilna Adriaanse. I enjoyed the well-structured course material, and appreciated that it also dealt with publishing aspects like blurbs and submission letters. But it is the one-on-one tutorship that really makes your courses special.

Thank you for helping me realise my life-long dream.

Regards
Martin
(I use my second name for writing, but enrolled in the course under my first name, Pieter)
